Embossing powders were my hook for rubber stamping. I attended a home rubber stamping party for a company called
D.O.T.S. (Dozens of Terrific Stamps) at least 10 years ago and when they embossed it was all over for me. I loved the
raised shiny look- just like a real card and so elegant and classy. I had to have them all, ha ha. Just like any
basic thing, I have fallen in love with embossing all over again and so what I like-you guys get too.
Don't forget to try your embossing powders on your polymer clay. You can mix it in the translucent clay for
a great look. You can also put embossing powders on your baked clay. You can create a faux stone look by mixing
in Distress embossing powders with the translucent clay.
Papers, books, metal - when you need a great look- think about embossing powders.
Embossing powders are resins or plastics. When heated with an embossing gun or heat tool, the powder melts creating
a raised image. The melted powder quickly cools down. When you are using a rubber stamp and embossing powders-
you need an ink that will stay wet long enough for the embossing powder to stick to it. Pigment inks work well with
embossing powders as well as the Ranger Distress Inks too.
When I began embossing, I was fascinated by the different looks I could get with one powder but using different color
ink pads.
You can coat a piece of paper with embossing powders and then run it through a die cut machine for a different look.
Emboss your chipboard, tags,
This was from a class I took with Tim Holtz at CHA 2008. We used an inexpensive Ikea frame and added
little 1x1 and other size chipboard pieces. We colored the chipboard using the TH Crackle Paints, some were just painted
with acrylic and then embossed using the Distress Emb. Powders and some were just painted using the Distress Ink Pads.
We then added little embellishments-brass crown, pen nib, hinge clip holding a piece of cardstock from the TH line, bottle
cap, keyhole key, the Tim Holtz numeral embellishments and some of the chipboard was just left opne for the color.
Sorry the pic isn't better, I have this hanging on the wall and could not get very close to it with the
camera. I loved this project. It was simple, easy and yet with such a dramatic look when completed. The
center is a mirror so you can see my little wooden art poseable mannequin-he is waving "hi" to everyone- in the
mirror- just an added fun and unexpected thing.
Tim Holtz Distress Embossing Powders
will be first in the line up. These powders have been specially formulated to have crystals drop off. After
embossing, simply rub off the special release crystals. This creates a textured worn and weathered look. These
powders have a matte look-not glossy. Think about your stamps of an old barn with this texture on them. These
embossing powder colors also coordinate with the Distress Embossing Inks but any ink for embossing is fine. These are
acid-free, non toxic. They come in a 1 oz. plastic container.
