Tim Holtz Alcohol Inks by Ranger Industries, Polished Stone

Alcohol Inks- Tim Holtz has worked with Ranger Industries to formulate these wonderful alcohol inks. Ranger Industries is the manufacturer of the wonderful dye ink pads called Adirondaks. I have used them for years and have always liked them and loved the colors they came in. The same great Adirondack colors are available in alcohol inks. These alcohol inks were previously sold only in kits but are now available open stock, individually, to you.

Alcohol inks are permanent, fast drying, transparent, acid free dye inks specially formulated to create a vibrant polished stone effect on glossy surfaces. These are beautiful on glass, dominoes, metal, foil, shrink plastic, acetate, glossy cardstock and other slick materials. Tim helped design these inks to allow artists to work on non-porous surfaces using nature's spectrum of colors.

They come in 24 colors and 4 metallic mixatives in a .5 oz. plastic bottle with application tip.

The Metallic Mixatives are luminous, fast drying, acid free inks, specially formulated to create metallic highlights when combined witht the alcohol inks. These can be used on all non porous surfaces such as glossy paper, dominos, Memory Glass, metal, foil, shrink plastic and other slick surfaces.

Ranger Fillable Alcohol Ink Pen~This is a pen that you can fill with your favorite alcohol ink color or alcohol blending solution. You are creating your own custom pen to use and fill over and over. It comes with a dual tip -brush point and fine point and has an ergonomically shaped barrel. Use your filled pen on glossy and matte papers, glass, metal and plastic. It has an air-tight cap so that your ink does not evaporate and it has an area on the barrel of the pen so that you can mark the color you have in the pen. It seems they have thought of everything-except the project and they probably can help with that too.

These pens can also be used with other companies inks.

Alcohol ink pens can also be used to create custom colors-such as a lighter value of a color. For the alcohol inks- you can create a lighter tone by breaking it down with some of the alcohol blending solution. Just be sure to mark you pen with a label identifying the custom color.

Watercolor with Alcohol inks ~ This was a tip from a gal-Lindsay Weirich found in Vamp Stamp News Publication. You can squirt out the alcohol inks in a plastic watercolor palette and let them dry. She then used a waterbrush to paint with them, She said the alcohol inks will not smear water-based ink or computer printer ink and is waterproof.

How do I apply these alcohol inks?

I am glad you asked, I have some applicators made up that I made from wood, felt and Velcro. These are inexpensive if you don't want to fuss and make them yourself. To make an applicator, you can use an old style rubber stamp you no longer use- the kind with the handle on it. You need one about 1/2 wide or more and about 1.5" - 2" long at least. Remove the old rubber stamp die- peel it off. Then apply some Velcro to it, the side that has the grabby things on it. Cut some felt to match the size of your rubber stamp and the felt adheres to the Velcro. You then apply your ink to the Velcro. You don't need much, just a little dap pressing the tip of the bottle directly onto the felt and at least a mix of 3 colors is best. The metallic mixatives really set off the look. You don't want to mix the colors on the felt or have them touching (they will spread a little). Then you dab your color combo onto the surface you are working on. (The video leaves no doubt as to how to use your alcohol inks.) They dry very quickly. You can use the alcohol inks to color your clear Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel (UTEE). (The video shows how to do this also). You simply get a small container and put some UTEE in, apply the alcohol ink generously (start with 10 drops or so). and mix with a small spoon. You can sotre for later use in your Melting Pot. YOU NEVER use the alcohol inks directly into the melting pot- because of the alcohol you will get a flash. However, when you mix the alcohol inks with the UTEE, during the mixing and stirring the alcohol is evaporated thus making them safe for use in your melting pot. Prior to viewing the videos, I liked the alcohol inks but really only had in mind the polished stone technique look. After viewing the video, I have several new uses for them and they are all good.

It is amazing to me the gorgeous look you can achieve with alcohol inks on dominos or other non-porous surfaces like glass, plastic, glossy paper, etc. This sample is on the medium size domino. I left this domino blank but you could stamp on it to add more depth and interest. I wanted to showcase the beautiful color combinations you can arrive at with the alcohol inks. A quick and beautiful background!

Also, this scan doesn't begin to capture the copper metallic that was added to it. I applied copper foil tape to the perimeter of the domino for a finished look.

Cool Background Technique with Reinkers~I belong to several local stamping groups and at one of our recent meetings a gal shared this technique...You probably are all familiar with the clear plastic clamshell boxes that Stampin' Up rubber stamps come packaged in--well- this is so cool- you put a few drops of your chosen reinker color in the box, then you put a marble in it and then you double stick tape your glossy card stock to the lid of the box. Close the lid and shake- rattle and roll it- your glossy cardstock comes out with a wonderful random design for a background. She suggested you could use 2 colors of reinker at the same time but position the drops in the clamshell box so that the colors don't run together and get muddy.
